| A breathing system test facility has been established at
the Stopford Building. An M.Sc. project extending the alarm work performed on the EAR
breathing system has been applied to the Bain breathing system in simulated spontaneous
breathing. Using this method it is hoped failure detection based on simple transducers and
using neural network classification after normalisation can be incorporated into a
prototype system. Preliminary work gave overall classification rates of 98% on 7 failure
modes and normal in an EAR breathing system. This is much better than comparable systems
using more transducers. This work is the subject of an EPSRC grant application at present.
